This week I was pleased to join fellow members of Study Toowoomba in welcoming Hermann Vorster MP, Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs and International Student Attraction, on his first visit to our region as part of the Regional Engagement Program.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity to showcase what makes Toowoomba such an attractive destination for international students and their families. With 2,106 enrolments and generating $149 million in export revenue in 2024, international education is already a major contributor to our region’s economy and community.
During the roundtable, we discussed the importance of creating mutually beneficial linkages between international students and local businesses. This not only supports our economy but also enriches cultural and community life across the Toowoomba Region.
I emphasised that passenger rail and reliable public transport are vital services if we are to continue attracting and retaining students. Better connectivity between Brisbane and Toowoomba would give students access to all three university campuses, while also strengthening links to international flights.
Toowoomba’s unique offerings set us apart: world-class opportunities in Health, IT, Agriculture, Environmental Studies and Engineering, alongside future growth in space, aero tech and advanced manufacturing. Combined with our quality schools, safe and welcoming community, and exceptional TAFE facilities, we are well positioned to play a key role in Queensland’s International Student Attraction Strategy.
Our region’s future is bright, and I am proud to ensure that Council continues to support the growth of this vital sector.
